HBO Max has officially decided not to renew creators Zelda and Daniel Barnz’s coming-of-age dramedy series Generation for a second season. The cancellation comes after over two months since the Lena Dunham-produced series had concluded its 16-episode first season last July.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Genera+ion,” HBO Max said in a statement (via Deadline). “We are very proud to have partnered with Zelda and Daniel Barnz to faithfully and authentically represent LGBTQ youth with such a diverse group of characters and layered stories. We thank them and our wonderfully gifted cast for all their hard work and collaboration.”

Generation (stylized as Genera+ion) was a dark yet playful half-hour series that told the story of a diverse group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love, and the nature of family in their conservative community.

It starred Nathanya Alexander, Chloe East, Nava Mau, Lukita Maxwell, Haley Sanchez, Uly Schlesinger, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Chase Sui Wonders with Justice Smith and Martha Plimpton.

Generation was created and executive produced by Zelda and Daniel Barnz, who both co-written several episodes, with Daniel Barnz also directing. Executive producers were Lena Dunham, Sharr White, John Melfi, Sono Patel, and Fernanda Coppel, with Marissa Díaz and Michael Cohen set as producers.
